Trinity College Dublin

Larne

Trinity College initially bought 12 Big Belly Solar Compactors from Kyron Limited in 2008 and over the past two years have extended the total number of solar compactors to 26. We are delighted with the efficiencies they provide on the Campus and are planning to purchase additional units over the coming months. We have experienced no vandalism problems with the Big Belly and where installed they have eliminated the problem of vermin and birds attacking binned rubbish and scattering it around the College grounds.

I can confirm that the frequency of emptying the bins is only about 20% of that for our standard bins. As the Main Street has to be swept and 12 other bins on the street have to be emptied twice daily, there has been no effective reduction in staff time.

However, we plan to acquire additional Big Bellys as part of a system, as the level of service appears to have improved slightly in that overflowing bins are less evident.

The latest IBAL survey found the Main Street "Clean to European Norms" and commented specifically on the introduction of the Big Belly smartbin.

We are also happy that the Big Belly street bins have not suffered from vandalism.

"Ballina Town Council have piloted and tested the Big Belly Solar Compactor and we are very satisfied with the results to date.

We tested one unit outside a very busy take away/restaurant and we found it didn't require any emptying during weekends.

The response from the public has been positive, there have been no vandalism issues and we are planning to purchase more Big Bellys in the near future."

City of Philadelphia, USA

Larne

“Yesterday we unveiled Greenworks Philadelphia, Philadelphia’s new comprehensive sustainability framework that sets us on the path to becoming America’s number one green city,” said Mayor Nutter.

“Today we are proud to announce the largest deployment of solar powered litter baskets anywhere in America. This technology will save taxpayers money, introduce sidewalk recycling and keep our streets clean. This is one more important step towards achieving our sustainability goals.

“We are pleased to be using this advanced technology and embrace ideas like this that will save us money and natural resources,” according to Streets Commissioner Clarena Tolson.

For the first time in Philadelphia, there will be pedestrian recycling baskets. These recycling baskets will be set next to 210 of these solar-powered litter baskets to allow pedestrians to place their recyclables in as they walk by.

Larne council's director of environmental services, Philip Thompson, said the bins would reduce operating costs and be more environmentally friendly. "The compacting aspect of the bins makes them ideal for busy tourist locations because the compacting function increases the holding capacity of the bin.

"This is particularly useful because the added volume helps cater for increased use on busy tourist days," he said. "Moreover, as they are completely pest-proof, the bins also eliminate the potential for birds and rodents to access the litter."
